KandyParticipantNEW BEACH POLICY BUDGET ITEMAs the Board has been explaining for some time now the Aruba Government recently created a new Beach Commission, which sets the rules and fees for resorts using the beach. It also requires that all resorts file a permit application, which we have done.
Although we have not yet received our bill for the use of the beach we have to set aside a guestimate amount in our budget as to what the bill might be and that is what the New Beach Policy of $30,000 line item reflects.
The beach permit fee, which will be based on the square meters of our beach, could be more than $30,000 or less than $30,000 but we have to set aside funds to pay whatever it might be when the bill finally arrives.
CWA SERVICE ALLOWANCE SEVERANCE – From $20,000 to $170,242
Aruba Labor Law as well as the ABC staff union contract requires us to pay out a severance amount, based on a formula of time of service at the ABC and their salary, to all retiring staff members.
Based on the Labor Law and the Union Contract we must set aside funds to pay for the severance package of folks who will be retiring in that budget year.
PURCHASING BEACH SAND
Although we did buy a small amount of sand immediately after the storm the Government then stepped up and gave us 1,000 cubic meters of sand.
I hope that answers all your questions and If not and you have any other questions regarding what’s on the 2017 Convocation PLEASE just ask!
AGENDA POINT 4
The wording on Agenda Point 4 is very plain. A NO vote, will keep the practice the same, ABC members at 6:00 a.m. and CDM members are welcome after 8:00 a.m. As for why it’s on the ballot is very simply. We have owners that own at both the ABC and at the CDM and they asked the Board to place it on the ballot so ALL ABC owners could decide which policy they prefer.

- in reply to: maintenance fees 2017
KandyParticipantHi Gail,
ABC does not have a portal for paying maintenance fees online. You have to mail them to the address on your bill or you can do a bank wire transfer, instructions also on your bill.
You might try emailing the Members Relations Coordinator at [email protected]
and asking if there is a way to pay over the phone. The office probably won’t reopen until Tuesday, January 3 so I wouldn’t expect a reply until then.- 10/30/2016 at 2:13 am

KandyParticipantMr. BuschAs I’ve mentioned in the few postings I’ve put on the ABC Owners Facebook page in the past, I do not like to conduct club business on a public forum like Facebook.
Just send me an e-mail and you will get a response as soon as possible. However, I do have other responsibilities, obligations and priorities in my life beside the ABC so it may not be an immediate response but everyone will get a response from me.
This Board was elected by the majority of our members and given the responsibility to manage club business and make decisions that we feel are in the best interest of the majority of our 6,000 members and the future of our club, not to run every decision we have to make by 6,000 members for approval first before we proceed. If we had to do that before every decision we made nothing would ever get done. The only exception according to our Articles is that any expenditures exceeding $250,000 must be put before the members for a vote.
One thing I’ve learned as an ABC Board member for the last 6 years is that the saying “You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time” is so true.
We as a Board realize that we will never be able to please everyone but I do think that this Board does a pretty good job of pleasing most of the people most of the time with the decisions we are making.
As for your comment, “This lack of transparency and response are totally and completely unacceptable. This project has a been in the works for months and NOTHING was officially discussed by the Board and shared with the membership” is a ridiculous statement when you then went on and copied and pasted two statements I made at two separate owners meetings where I clearly discussed Ricardo’s and the deck expansion clearly contradicting yourself.I don’t think you have ever had a Board of Directors that provides its members with as much information as this Board does, providing detailed minutes of our Board meetings, a monthly financial report, detailed minutes of every Tuesdays owners meetings as well as every Board member attending ever owners meeting whenever they are at the ABC, personally I attend about 17 meetings a year.
Our beach took a tremendous hit from Hurricane Matthew and believe me when I say that the pictures and videos you’ve seen on Facebook don’t begin to do it justice. The damage to our beach was devastating. We lost 46 huts, 8 palm trees with a few more that are so damaged they may not survive and most of our beach.
As I stated in my previous posting every hut will be replaced and will be replaced as soon as possible. What more can I say, every hut as soon as possible!
Now that I am at the ABC, on vacation I might add, and the cleanup is finished we are trying to figure out just what help if any we will get from the government, what we must begin doing ourselves and what we we’ll just have to leave for mother nature to finish. She took it away now lets just hope she brings most of it back.
As for Ricardo’s and his rent, Ricardo’s is a tenant in a building owned by the ABC and their rent is based on a percentage of his gross sales. The better Ricardo’s does the more rent the Club receives, which helps keep our maintenance fees still the lowest of any timeshare on Aruba, so we all benefit.
Ricardo’s patio deck we propose, and applied for through the new Beach Commission months ago, is not an extension of the building or will it take up a significant amount of the beach. We just took advantage of having all the heavy equipment and personal on the beach for the storm clean up and repairs to set the pilings.
This is a project that we have been discussing openly for months, as you can see from your own copied and pasted inserts from the owners meetings of weeks 21 & 25. It has not been a secret and nothing has been hidden from the owners as you have suggested.
This is why we post the minutes of every owners meeting on the ABC website, trying to be even more transparent. Owners just have to have enough interest in their club to take the time to either attend the weekly owners meeting or take the time to read the owners meeting minutes that are posted weekly, as well as the minutes of the Board meetings and the General Manager’s quarterly report on the ABC website.
No secrets, no hidden agenda, just complete transparence.
As I stated at the beginning of this reply we realize that we will never be able to please everyone, we just try to make sound business decisions that we feel are in the best interest of the majority of our members and the future of our club.
Respectfully yours,
Kevin Foley, Chairman
ABC Board of Directors- 10/20/2016 at 8:08 pm
- in reply to: Photos of the storm damage at ABC
KandyParticipantI can’t imagine how you felt being on the island during such a horrific storm. As you said most of the damage came AFTER the storm had passed with the surge that caught many of the resorts off guard. The excavator you see in the picture was brought in by ABC to place the rocks back in their original position. These boulders, which are normally covered by sand, often become exposed after a storm but this time many were lifted and tossed upon the beach like marbles. Getting them back into position quickly was critical to protect the beach we had left. The ocean will bring back the sand (hopefully soon) and all the resorts could possibly get a little help with sand from the government once the hurricane season is over. We will just have to wait and see what each day brings.
Thank you for being so understanding during your stay. The staff worked long hours to make the guests as comfortable as possible.

KandyParticipantAlso sometimes previous guests leave coffee filters also and you are correct Kris, all those kind of things can be bought in the mini market or grocery store. I keep that kind of stuff in my storage box so I don’t have to lug it down each trip.- 09/12/2016 at 12:28 am

KandyParticipantThe “giveaways” at the weekly members meetings just started this year at the May 24th meeting and they are not given by ABC but by Jean, a representative of Pelican Adventures. She does this after her presentation about what Pelican trips have to offer members and guests. If Jean is not present there are no giveaways.- 06/01/2016 at 11:48 am
